Marion Christian Academy

Private does NOT always mean better!

I attended Marion Christian Academy for the 8th grade only, and my best friend attended from 7th grade through 12th. While I was there I was shocked to witness a classmate (age 14!) being spanked by his mother who was a teacher, and to be told that early man coexisted with fire-breathing dinosaurs. Boys were allowed to run wild and even physically assault girls, while we girls were expected to be little ladies and not retaliate.

However, my friend fared far worse than I did. She was an extremely intelligent kid but came from a very poor family. Her parents made sacrifices to send her to a private school, hoping she would be the first in the family to go to college and make them proud. Instead, the teachers at Marion Christian Academy destroyed her self-confidence by trying to convince her that everything she was interested in was un-Godly (movies, music, literature, writing, science, medicine, etc.) Even worse, they gave her NO college guidance whatsoever: no suggestions for schools, no help with applications, no information about loans or scholarships... college wasn't even mentioned. Her parents had no way of knowing this stuff, so she ended up not going. She is still trying to make up for the ground she lost in life because of this shameful neglect.

If the most important thing to you is that your children never learn anything about the big, scary, evil world outside Marion, North Carolina, then by all means send them to Marion Christian Academy. But if you actually care about academic achievement, intellectual growth, and college education, either move someplace with quality schools, or at very least send them to the McDowell County public schools. Private does NOT always mean better!
